Southern rock stalwarts Drivin N Cryin are gearing up to release a new record and have shared the project’s powerful lead single. “Mirror Mirror” finds frontman Kevn Kinney ruminating on the passage of time and its unpredictable effects on us all.
“I wrote ‘Mirror Mirror’ as a song to try and understand the effects dementia and Alzheimer’s has on my mother,” Kinney shares. “It’s in support of my sisters who are supporting her. She’s in a living care facility in Milwaukee, and my visits with her are beautiful and heartbreaking.”
“I know you’re in there somewhere / Can you make it out?” Kinney asks softly in the song’s emotionally-charged opening lines. “Maybe it’s a safe place you’re wandering around / In and out of memories, in and out of days / I know you’re in there somewhere, I see it in your face.”
“’I know you’re in there somewhere’ is the continuing theme … and as in most of my songs, it’s on a couple different viewpoints,” he adds. “The last verse is actually an insight to my own possibilities of this disease, believed by many to be hereditary, so in the last verse I’m staring in the mirror in the beginning stages. Memories are clear and so alive, echoes of the past and moving through life with sanity and grace.”
