John Prine-approved singer-songwriter Kelsey Waldon has a new album on the way, and it promises to be her most raw and honest project to date. Every Ghost, set for release on June 20 via Oh Boy Records, finds the Kentucky native unraveling trauma and examining the person she’s become along the way.
With her lead single, “Comanche,” Waldon reflects on how we present ourselves outwardly and what happens when a once-close connection becomes a distant blur in your rearview mirror. Through expertly crafted lyricism, Waldon uses her own 1988 Jeep Comanche as a source of inspiration and a symbol of independence.
“I love the whole aspect of when design mattered,” Waldon shares. “Owning your car was an expression of yourself. ‘Comanche’ is about grappling with the loss of a loved one, but not to death — it’s to boundaries that I’ve set for myself.”
“That’s why I like to ride around alone / Think about everything I’ve done,” she sings declaratively in the track’s chorus. “Take it all in and enjoy the show / Just like it’s the first time.”
“Comanche” offers an intriguing early preview of Every Ghost, which Waldon recorded at Memphis’ Southern Grooves studio alongside her band, The Muleskinners. Although fans are sure to embrace the traditional country sound that has become a staple of Waldon’s releases, evolution and growth seem to be two key themes at the heart of Every Ghost, both lyrically and sonically.
“There’s a lot of hard-earned healing on this record,” explains Waldon. “I’ve put in the work not only to better myself and leave behind bad habits but also to learn to love my past selves. It took time and experience, but I’ve come to find compassion for who I was, and that’s a major part of this album.”
Waldon will spend much of the summer on the road supporting Every Ghost, beginning with a performance at Skinny Dennis in Nashville and continuing to cities across the U.S. through the end of August.
