Americana stalwarts Greensky Bluegrass are set to release a new film that documents the creation of their 2024 EP. Set to premiere next month, Find Ourselves Lost, The Iceland Sessions serves as the feature-length directorial debut from accomplished music photographer René Huemer.

The documentary comprises footage shot inside Flóki Studios, located amongst the rural landscapes of North Iceland, during the recording process of The Iceland Sessions EP. Under Huemer’s creative direction, Greensky Bluegrass delivers a raw and honest visual portrait of the complicated emotions that can emerge during the artistic process, along with unfiltered discussions about how mental health, addiction, and other personal issues affect the longtime bandmates.

“When we decided to make a film about the making of The Iceland Sessions EP, the idea was essentially to let René make something beautiful where the band and the location were both the subject,” explains Greensky Bluegrass dobroist Anders Beck. “We know René as a friend through his work with Phish and trusted his artistic vision enough to put him in the driver’s seat. I, and the whole band as well, love that the stunning scenery of Iceland plays such a huge role in the film. To me, it feels like an art piece as much as a music documentary. I think that is really special and unique.

“What started out as a documentary about the band making a record turned into much more… we all individually (and unbeknownst to each other) really ended up opening up to the camera about so much more than just this particular recording session,” he continues. “The finished product was pretty jarring at first to us, but that is the sign of good art to me. The film captures a time of real vulnerability and introspection in Greensky’s life, addressing both the human and musical aspects of being in a band.

“I’m really proud of this documentary for being more than just a fluff piece, honestly,” adds Beck. “For a band that has always prided ourselves on our brand of silly humor and fun, it took a lot of guts to really let people see behind the curtain at some of the real struggles we’ve faced together.”

“The journey of creating Find Ourselves Lost has been one of profound discovery and passion,” Huemer shares. “This film was born from a deep desire to delve into the psychological landscape of the acclaimed band, Greensky Bluegrass, as they embarked on the intimate process of recording an album in the remote, stunning landscape of Iceland. I was inspired to highlight that even well-achieved artists grapple with their own struggles, a reality often obscured by the facade of social media. This revelation is crucial in a world where we often mistakenly believe that success shields one from the human experience of fear and insecurity.”

You can catch Greensky Bluegrass out on the road in support of their latest album, XXV, through the summer. A list of all upcoming tour dates is listed below. You can find more information about the shows and ticketing options by visiting the band’s official website.

Find Ourselves Lost, The Iceland Sessions will premiere Sunday, April 5, at 7 p.m ET, and will be available to stream online via Nugs and YouTube. Watch the film’s official trailer below:
