Cale Tyson Faces His Past and Uncertain Future In New Single ‘Bad Dog’

Singer-songwriter Cale Tyson tries to untie the weight of his past from fears of the future with his latest single, “Bad Dog.” The track marks his first new music since being diagnosed with Menière’s Disease, an intensive inner-ear disorder that can cause hearing loss, vertigo, and other difficult health issues.

Following his diagnosis in January 2025, Tyson spent two months channeling the complicated mixture of emotions and physical stressors into his art. “Bad Dog” serves as the first completed piece of that important chapter of creative catharsis.

“It came from this place of feeling like I deserved every bad thing that was happening to me,” says Tyson. “But writing it helped me arrive at a kind of acceptance—not of the condition itself, but of not knowing what comes next.”

Sonically, the Texas native’s newest song also marks a shift from the more mainstream country vibe at the core of his most recent releases over the past two years. In contrast, “Bad Dog” allows the track’s raw lyrics to take center stage against a sparse, intimate soundscape similar to that of his 2019 EP, Narcissist.

Although the track as a whole sounds light and airy on the surface, “Bad Dog” is an exploration of self-worth, the concept of karma, and the challenge of not letting your past define you and the future that lies ahead.

“Bad Dog” is just the first piece from an album’s worth of new music, penned and self-produced by Tyson. The painful effects of Menière’s Disease, which include periods of complete hearing loss, paralyzing bouts of tinnitus, and disorienting vertigo, initially caused self-doubt about his ability to create another full-length project.

“I wasn’t sure I’d ever be able to make another record,” Tyson says. “But I knew I had to try—at least one more time. This song is part of that process. It’s me trying to hold on.”

We’ll be patiently waiting for more details about a new record to come, which would be his first since his impressive 2017 record, Careless Soul. In the meantime, you can catch Tyson at two major music festivals this summer: Bourbon & Beyond 2025 in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 12, and Country Calling 2025 in Ocean City, Maryland, on October 3. You can find more information on these upcoming live sets by visiting Cale Tyson’s official website.
