Motion City Soundtrack Mark Return With New Album, Lead Single ‘She Is Afraid’

Nearly a decade has passed since Motion City Soundtrack stepped away from the spotlight, but the pop-punk hitmakers are back with a new project. Their seventh studio album, The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World, will arrive September 19 via Epitaph Records, marking the Minneapolis-based band’s first new full-length release since 2015.

With The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World, Motion City Soundtrack embraced the opportunity to experiment and evolve their sound, instead of trying to rekindle the magic of past releases. This growth can also be seen and heard lyrically, representing a new chapter for the group, collectively and individually.

“I think that if you look at a lot of our past records, it’s about ‘What’s wrong? What am I not getting right? Why do I feel fucking crazy? Why can’t I figure this out…’ and I figured it out,” lead vocalist and guitarist Justin Pierre shares. “It’s almost like I felt I didn’t have an identity [in the past] and now by working through the hard stuff, I know who I am.”

Sean O’Keefe, who worked on two of the band’s early releases, served as producer on the 11-track LP, which features collaborations with Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer, and Citizen’s Mat Kerekes.

To coincide with the album announcement, the band has also shared their infectious lead single “She Is Afraid,” which explores the exhausting tension and uncertainty that can bubble up within a relationship.
