Multi-talented jazz-pop phenom Laufey takes viewers along for a joyful, cinematic trek through Tokyo and beyond in her new music video for “Lover Girl.” The charming film accompaniment to the latest single off A Matter of Time, Laufey’s upcoming studio album, was directed by her identical twin, Junia Lin.
The video serves as a scenic backdrop to “Lover Girl,” which finds the genre-blending talent battling with her yearning desires for an object of affection who’s painfully out of reach.
“The hardest part of loving someone is being away from them,” she says of the track in a statement. “This is that story.”
“You’ve been hosting parties in my mind / I’m working overtime to have you in my world,” Laufey croons longingly in the track’s chorus. “Oh, what a curse it is to be a lover girl.”
Spencer Stewart, who worked on Laufey’s first two records, joined forces with Aaron Dessner to co-produce A Matter of Time, helping to shape an encouraging space for creative expansion in the studio.
“People expect a pretty façade of girly clothes, fantastical stories, and romantic music,” Laufey explains. “This time, I was interested in seeing how I could draw out the most flawed parts of myself and look at them directly in the mirror.”
A Matter of Time is set for release on August 22 via Vingolf Recordings/AWAL. Fans can hear cuts from the project live this fall by attending Laufey’s A Matter of Time Tour, which will make its way to venues across the U.S. and Canada through the end of October.
