It’s no easy feat to reimagine a beloved track from one of music’s most respected songwriters, but burgeoning singer-songwriter Satya makes that challenge look like child’s play with her take on Lucinda Williams’ “Fruits of My Labor.”

The talented Oakland, Calif., native artfully transforms the cut from Williams’ 2003 record, World Without Tears, without straying too far from the stellar original’s sonic roots. Instead, her spellbinding vocals mesh perfectly with the layered, slow-rolling soundscape, which sounds both freshly and comfortingly nostalgic at once.

“The first time I heard ‘Fruits of My Labor,’ I was in a dive bar in New Orleans,” Satya shares in a statement. “It was so loud in the bar, and my friend was talking to me, but the second the song came on, it felt like it cut straight through to me. I went home and immediately looked it up, read all the lyrics, and CRIED.

“The way I interpret the song is like writing to a past love about where you are now in your life,” she adds. “Lucinda’s lyrics helped me learn how to hold my own two truths at once. Learning to let it all go and move forward, and yet still finding the beauty of someone you loved in the past, finding traces of them in the present, even when they’re no longer there.”

ALBUM OUT JUNE 5 VIA GIANT MUSIC DISTRIBUTION

“Fruits of My Labor” is the third single shared from Satya’s debut album Yellow House, due out June 5 via Giant Music Distribution, following the opening cut “Project 10,” along with the record’s captivating title track. Recorded in Nashville with producer Colin Linden, Yellow House finds Satya sonically flipping through the chapters of her life, delivering unfiltered reflections on some of the most challenging moments she’s faced so far.

“Yellow House is raw and deeply personal, tracing my journal entries over the past several years,” explains Satya. “This album is dedicated to my inner child. It reflects on what it meant to grow up in an abusive household, and the duality of holding both unconditional love and pain. It explores the inner world I lived in as a child—honoring the darker parts of myself and what I witnessed growing up, and how I carried that pain with me while coming of age.

“I began writing the album at the start of 2020, and for the last couple of years, I went back and forth about how to share it with the world,” she continues. “It never felt completely finished until now—but this year, I realized it was time to release both the album and the version of myself it represents.

“My wish is that this work offers connection, release, strength, and healing—to myself, and to anyone who listens.”
