Captivating singer-songwriter Odie Leigh and indie-folk favorite Field Medic create collective magic with their brand new single, “All Star Breakfast.” Released today (Nov. 19), the intimate yet playful collaboration offers a feeling of catharsis as the song’s characters search for bits of joy in the discomforts of daily life.
“It’s funny the way things seem to go / You spend all your wishing but in Christmas it don’t snow,” the pair contemplate in the track’s all-too-relatable chorus. “So when I get to thinking and my thinking’s quite the mess / I think us lonely people could make something out of this.”
“I wrote ‘All Star Breakfast’ 3 years ago in my trailer one night and kept it in my back pocket, hoping the right moment would come along to release it,” Leigh shares in a statement. “After a month of recording my album, Carrier Pigeon, with Derek Ted, we felt like it would be sweet to go back to a stripped, cute folksy vibe for a change. We had been hoping to find a song to collaborate with Kevin (Field Medic) on and knew this ancient track was the perfect choice.
Cutesy, simple, and poetic, it felt like the perfect classic duet,” she adds. “Kevin re-wrote a couple of verses and we recorded it together in an afternoon. We wanted to keep a backyard, old time-y feel to it, and I hope y’all find it as sweet as we do!”
“I met Odie for the first time when she came to meet up with my former roommate Derek Ted (who would go on to record and produce Odie’s record Carrier Pigeon),” Field Medic, a.k.a. Kevin Patrick Sullivan, reflects. “What struck me about her personality and music was how individual of a singer and writer she was. Hearing a new authentic voice playing the style of folk I’ve always loved made it a no brainer when she asked me to duet her song ‘All Star Breakfast.’ She had most of the song written, so after I shuffled a couple of words around in the verses that I’d be singing, we recorded it on the spot. It probably took an hour. I’m stoked that it’s finally coming out!”
“All Star Breakfast” serves as Leigh’s first single since the release of her captivating debut album, Carrier Pigeon, which arrived in July. She’ll wrap up a jam-packed year with a string of live shows across the U.S. through the end of December. You can find more information on her upcoming tour dates here.
