Kathleen Edwards Dissects the Pain of Unrequited Love in ‘Pine’

Expert songsmith Kathleen Edwards has shared a captivating new single from her upcoming sixth studio album, Billionaire. Released today (July 2), “Pine” is a slow-rolling and raw track that captures the pain of trying to push down feelings for someone you can never call your own.

“I know you know we just can’t say it / You know I know we’d live to regret it,” Edwards sings, succinctly describing the bittersweet reality of a love meant to stay unrequited. “I know that you know when we go our separate ways / The thought of you stays.”

“On the 2-day drive from Ottawa to Nashville, a line popped in my head, ‘when we go our separate ways, the thought of you stays,'” Edwards shares of the song’s inspiration in a statement. “By the time I arrived in Nashville, I had written ‘Pine’ and it was the first track we put down for this album. Friends who can’t be lovers. A classic country song. At first, the arrangement made me feel incredibly bare and exposed, but I now love the spare production, Jason’s super dry electric solo makes me feel like Dusty.”

“Pine” is the latest early cut from Billionaire, due out August 22 via Dualtone Records. The 10-track LP, produced by Jason Isbell and Gena Johnson, features previously released singles “Save Your Soul” and “Say Goodbye, Tell No One.” Along with their production work, Isbell and Johnson provided musical accompaniment on the record, which also features contributions from Anna Butterss and Annie Clements on bass, Jen Gunderman on keys, Chad Gamble on drums and percussion, and backing vocals by Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer.

“I decided to call the record Billionaire because the word is used in such a caustic way these days,” she explains. “But we should all want to be billionaires in life, to be rich in experience, friendship, purpose, and the pursuit of the things that bring us joy.”
