When life unexpectedly shifts your trajectory in a way you never anticipated, it can also lead you down unexplored creative paths. For Cale Tyson, a medical disorder led the longtime musician to find fulfillment and meaning in another art form: film.
The result is Wayside, a four-part collection of colorful vignettes, offering playful, thought-provoking snapshots of moments captured within the uniquely stunning Western landscapes of the U.S. The collection of film segments is a captivating watch that transports viewers into a seemingly fictional universe, with characters and settings that feel both foreign and comfortingly familiar.
“Wayside is the first series of video pieces I’ve written and directed outside of my own music videos,” Tyson tells Barnburner. “As my Ménière’s disease has progressed (and hearing has declined), I’ve been fortunate enough to find new ways to pivot and continue expressing myself creatively.
“With Wayside, I wanted to capture the strange, funny, lonely feeling of being in-between versions of yourself, using the mythology and visual language of the American West as a backdrop,” he continues. “To me, it represents reinvention: finding humor, beauty, and meaning in a place you never expected to end up.”
Wayside premiered at Davis Keller Gallery in Los Angeles on Aug. 27, but you can view the entire project below now or by visiting Cale Tyson’s official website.
