The National’s Matt Berninger and Rosanne Cash have teamed up to record a new version of a classic track by The Velvet Underground for a new television series. Their take on “Who Loves the Sun,” a song from the band’s influential 1970 record Loaded, acts as the theme for Hulu’s new comedic drama series, Sunny Nights.
Will Forte and D’Arcy Cardem star in the show, directed and executive produced by Trent O’Donnell, which debuts on Hulu today (March 2). Sunny Nights viewers will also hear a portion of Berninger and Cash’s collaboration in the opening moments of the debut season’s first episode.
“I’ve been a Trent O’Donnell fan for a long time,” Berninger shares in a statement, explaining how the opportunity came to be. “We became good friends when he cast my brother, Tom, in an episode of his show No Activity, and we’ve had a close, creative bond ever since. When he asked me to cover the Velvet Underground for Sunny Nights, I immediately thought of it as a duet with Rose and John [Leventhal]. We recorded it in their Chelsea brownstone last summer. John did most of the work while Rose and I drank chardonnay in the garden in the sun.”
Cash has booked a handful of live dates for 2026, including stops in cities across the U.S. and overseas. She’ll be joined by her husband, acclaimed producer, musician, and songwriter John Leventhal, on all tour dates listed below.
