Although it was originally a successful single for Johnny Bush in 1972, “Whiskey River” is arguably one of the most recognizable songs in Willie Nelson‘s expansive songbook. Acclaimed vocal duo The War and Treaty has successfully made that familiar track all their own, a feat few artists can achieve with such ease.

Michael and Tanya Trotter’s commanding vocals take center stage on the cover, which was originally recorded during Luck Reunion 2023, the musical festival held on the grounds of Nelson’s Texas ranch. On Oct. 31, the husband-and-wife duo released their version of “Whiskey River” across streaming platforms, delivering fans a musical gem that transcends genre lines.

“Our version flips the emotional center,” The War & Treaty explain in a statement. “Instead of just numbing the pain, we want people to redeem it. Turn that same river into a revival. When we sing it, it’s not only about heartbreak, it’s about survival.”

Currently, the pair are out on their American Soul Revival Tour, which continues to cities across the U.S. through Nov. 21. Just eight days later, The War and Treaty will begin their stint as support for Sam Smith’s 7-date To Be Free: New York City residency, which runs through Dec. 13. You can find more information about all tour dates listed below by visiting The War and Treaty’s official website.
