Gifted lyricist and musician Valerie June spotlights the close ties that bind the classic blues and hard rock genres with her surprising new cover. Released today (Nov. 12), her innovative, gritty rendition of the classic blues standard acts as a fitting musical tribute to the late heavy metal icon, Ozzy Osbourne.
Propelled by wavy, distorted banjo expertly plucked by June, ‘Rollin’ and Tumblin’’ gains a fresh, genre-melding soundscape that’s unpredictable yet never strays too far over the edge.
“Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne’s dark, heavy metal sound was heavily influenced by the blues,” June reflects in a statement. “As a multi-genre artist, I wanted to take this old standard and perform it with my banjo running through a super fuzzy electric guitar amp. Working with Matt Marinelli (producer, bass) and Andy Macleod (drums), we turned this song upside down and inside out.
“The heavy metal banjo breaks the chains that confine it to traditional forms by meeting rock and roll,” she shares. “The result is a fierce and wild reconstruction that is Ozzy-influenced and dedicated to his memory.”
June is currently out on her Big Ole Worldwide Tour, which includes upcoming stops in Spain, France, England, the Netherlands, and more before the end of the year.
