Following its recent debut at the Sundance Film Festival, a new documentary centered on the life and music of Jeff Buckley will be available to watch in multiple ways later this year. Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. distribution rights of It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, and will broadcast the film on HBO and HBO Max later this year.

The film, which will be screened in theaters across the country beginning August 8, offers an intimate look into the late singer-songwriter’s creative mind and personal life. A longtime passion project of director Amy Berg, the documentary features previously unseen video footage, audio recordings, and new interviews with loved ones, including his mother, Mary Guibert, as well as fellow artists of the era like Aimee Mann and Ben Harper.

“I’ve spent practically my entire career trying to make this film, which takes a very intimate look at one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time,” says Berg. “I’m so excited Magnolia and HBO have come on board to share this film with the world and give old fans and new audiences a chance to experience Jeff from this unique vantage point. I couldn’t imagine a better team to roll this into the world!”

Although Buckley only released one album before his death at age 30, his distinctive vocals and keen sense of artistry have cemented him as one of the most influential artists of the 1990s. His cover of “Hallelujah,” one of 10 stirring tracks on his 1994 record Grace, has been repeatedly cited as one of the best songs ever recorded. In 2013, it was selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in its National Recording Registry, which houses music and media that has been deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, and inform or reflect life in the United States.”

It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley was produced by Berg, Jennie Bedusa, Mandy Chang, Christine Connor, Ryan Heller, and Matthew Roozen.
