Chet Faker, the acclaimed musical project of Australian singer-songwriter Nick Murphy, has returned with a beautifully melancholic new track. Released today (Sept. 11), “Inefficient Love” offers a sparse and hypnotic soundscape that serves as the backdrop to Murphy’s cuttingly honest lyrics.
“‘Inefficient Love’ was one of those songs that beamed in from somewhere,” Murphy shares. “I was sitting on my couch at home watching a show and start playing the guitar and just played the whole song in about 5 minutes. It feels old and I love it.”
“My inefficient love / Again breaks my heart in two pieces,” Murphy sings mournfully in the track’s chorus. “My inefficient love / Some friend calls my name and then leaves in the end / My inefficient love.”
The painfully beautiful “Inefficient Love” arrives just a few weeks after the surprise drop of “Far Side of the Moon,” the first new Chet Faker single since the release of his 2021 album, Hotel Surrender. The two tracks seem to indicate that a possible full-length project might be coming in the months ahead, but we’ll just have to wait and see what’s next for the ARIA Award-winning act.
