Seasoned singer-songwriter Rhett Miller has a brand new record ready to share later this year. Announced today (August 5), his 10th solo album, A lifetime of riding by night, is set for release on October 10 via ATO Records. Miller has also given fans a teaser of what’s on the way with “Come As You Are,” the LP’s lead single featuring backing vocals from Turnpike Troubadours‘ Evan Felker.
“Well, you come as you are and you leave with a smile / You got a way, honey, you got a style / That you play,” Miller and Felker gently croon in the track’s entrancing chorus. “So I wake in the mornin’ and start out my day / To the sound of you walkin’ away / To the sound of you walkin’ away.”
“That song came together at a time when Evan and I were both wrestling with the difficulty of leaving our loved ones behind to go on tour,” Miller shares in a statement, describing the inspiration behind his lead single. “It’s a sweet song, but there’s a sadness to it, which feels reflective of the true human condition. Evan’s band, Turnpike Troubadours, recorded a version of the song a few years back as a single, but it’s always been in my mind that I wanted to record my own version of the song. Despite it being a co-write, ‘Come As You Are’ feels like a really personal moment. That said, I get a tickle out of hearing Evan’s harmony on there – he’s such a talented guy and a great friend.”
“Rhett has been a never-ending source of inspiration and wit and humility for my career and for the times when I didn’t have one,” adds Felker. “He writes with a passion for the world that is as reckless as it is correct and smart. Whatever deal he made with the devil, I want that one too. He’s the prime example of why you should meet your heroes.”
Felker is just one of the talented co-writers featured on the 13 tracks that make up A lifetime of riding by night, including Caitlin Rose, Nicole Atkins, and Gin Blossoms’ Jesse Valenzuela. The project was produced by Miller’s former Old 97’s bandmate Murry Hammond, and recorded inside Dave’s Room in Los Angeles just a few days before Miller underwent surgery on his vocal chords. That major life event understandably led the multi-talented Texas native to reflect on the fragility of life, the importance of love, and the delicate ties that bind us all together, which became prominent themes within the songs on A lifetime of riding by night.
In support of his upcoming album, Miller will hit the road for a lengthy solo tour later this year. The stretch of dates begins with a performance in Amagansett, New York, before continuing to San Francisco, Portland, Dallas, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and more.
