Country hitmaker Mark Chesnutt has revealed details about the health scare that inspired him to embrace sobriety and return to the road. While his career was reaching new heights in the 1990s, a decade that earned him 14 No. 1 hits on country radio including “It Sure Is Monday” and “Brother Jukebox,” the Texas native underwent invasive spine surgery after fracturing his spine, followed later by open heart surgery.
Years later, in 2021, the award-winning artist suddenly lost the ability to walk, leading him to an urgent surgery. The long process of recovery, which was delayed further due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, kept Chesnutt on bed rest for an extended period.
The physical pain and feelings of isolation led him to drink in excess, reviving an addiction that he faced years earlier. This time, it nearly took his life, causing internal bleeding that led to a hospital stay and four blood transfusions.
Chesnutt has been sober since November 1, 2023. Just five months later, he survived an emergency quadruple bypass surgery. Now, he says he’s “back and doing better than ever,” and ready to return to what he loves most: performing for his fans.
“I’m so happy about my Redemption Tour,” Chesnutt explains in a statement. “I’m going out with excitement and a renewed energy for all aspects of performing and possibly recording. I love being on stage and seeing and hearing the crowd. I now realize that’s what I love about being in this business.”
